President Report

Mandurah Philatelic Society

AGM 2008

This is my report to the Mandurah Philatelic Society as President.  During the past 12 months, a dedicated team of like-minded philatelists and stamp collectors have once again come together on the committee of the MPS to promote the hobby, organise philately and help the Mandurah stamp club to develop.

Let me introduce these people:

Successful Year

Stamp, Coin and Banknote fair

Another successful Stamp, Coin & Banknote Fair was held at the Dudley Park Bowling & Recreation Club from 9.00am to 3.00pm on Sunday April 13, 2008.  The feeling from all the stallholders was that this was a successful fair and the venue (Dudley Park Bowling Club) was a fantastic venue. Many of the bowlers came in after their game and had a chat with the stall holders.

Special thanks also to Andrew Martin and Joe Cheesman for once again running the Junior Collectors area.

MADSAR (Mandurah Disabled Support and Recreational Respite) once again managed to feed the starving hordes with hamburgers and sausage sizzle.  Their pricing was a bargain with only $3.00 per hamburger and $2.50 for sausage sizzle.  We look forward to having them at every fair in the future.

While the Murray divisions bowling teams played in superb weather conditions, more than 250 people visited the Fair.  Many of the visitors were able to acquire new material for their collections, while others took the opportunity to discuss ways of selling their excess stamps, coins and banknotes with dealers and club members.  For some people, the main attraction was the social environment and the chance to talk about their hobbies with like-minded collectors.  Several people showed interest in joining one or both of the two collectors’ clubs.

Club members and Perth dealers manned the stalls, including The Rare Coin Company, Trevor’s Coins, Mike Kouwen and Ian Bolton.  The general public was encouraged to vote for their favourite coin, banknote and stamp displays, with winning club members receiving certificates for their display efforts.  The winners were: Colin Briggs (Coin display), Neville Harlow (Banknote display), Glen Stafford (Stamp display), Chris Stone (Youth entry) & Kerry Stone (Open entry).  Special mention to the runner-ups for the stamp displays: Lisa Griffiths and Keith Michaelson.  Congratulations to the winners and to all those who made the effort to create a display for the day.  Although there can only be one winner in each category, all of the entries set a high standard amongst the Mandurah-based Clubs.

A special thanks to all the volunteers who were at the Bowling club before 7.00am to help set up.  We were operational well before the 9.00am opening time.

Last but not least, nine lucky people were winners in the raffle prize pool.  More than $300 in prizes was won – each for the bargain-basement price of a $2 raffle ticket.  These prizes where donated by the dealers at the show and Darrell Adams.  First Prize Danni, 2nd Prize L McGill, 3rd Prize to our junior member Chris Stone.

New Members

A successful year is always judged on the new members that it attracts.  To this end, I welcome all our new members and hope they enjoy the fellowship of our club and our hobby.

In summary, I have enjoyed this year as President and am proud to serve this club.

Good Luck and happy collecting
